Mazatlan is one of the world’s premier spots for deep sea fishing.  Marlin is fairly plentiful in the winter and summer. Sailfish, Dolphin, Bonita and Tuna are available year round.  Additionally, whales run off the coast from December through March and you’re apt to see porpoises, sharks, Mahi-Mahi, Dorado anytime. Inshore fishing is good for an unusually wide variety of species including snook, true red snapper or huachinango, triggerfish, sierra, various grouper and bass species, roosterfish, pompano, corvina, mixed jacks, mojarra, and a large variety of assorted surface and bottom fish species.  What few realize is the world-class quality of bass fishing at Lake El Salto just to the east of Mazatlan.  Fishing companies in Mazatlan will make all arrangements for either.

Doug and Cyndi Comments

There are several fleet companies in Mazatlan that offer day packages and good rates. Typically, their boats are in great shape and clean, their crews are very professional and courteous, and they are easy to get to from our house. Comparable fishing excursions in Cabo San Lucas would cost at least twice what the same excursions cost in Mazatlan.

El Cid Country Club Golf Course

El Cid Golf and Country Club has an impressive 18-hole course, which is complemented by the addition of the new Lee Trevino nine, for a total of 27 championship holes. The Marina Nine, as the third course is called, was designed by Lee Trevino using water on seven of the nine holes. This beautiful course is situated in the heart of the Golden Zone and is surrounded by the El Cid Marina. These courses are considered by many as two of the top courses in all of Mexico. The El Cid Golf and Country Club has played host to many international golf events and is situated on a biological reserve that is home to deer, turtles, fish, exotic birds, and crocodiles in a natural setting. Known for its excellent views and for its lakes, the course is challenging to all skill levels.
The course at El Cid is open to the public only during the off season or on a limited basis during high season.  It is not necessary to call ahead for reservations even during the high season. Caddies are mandatory for all non-members.  They are universally excellent…and great golfers so don’t bet them double or nothing.  They work for their tips only.  I gave them $15 for a single, $20 for a two-some.

Caddies are mandatory for all non-members. While the country club receives caddy fees, the caddies themselves only receive tips.  I gave them $15 for a single, $20 for a two-some.)  They are universally excellent, typically speak good English and know the history of the course, many of the homes, and their owners.  They are also great golfers so don’t bet them double or nothing on their tips.
The courses themselves are not overly challenging and make for a very relaxing day.  Fairways are generally flat and are lined by palm trees.  Holes tend to feature slight dog legs and more sand and water than you might guess.  Fairways and greens are Bermuda, are irrigated, and are kept in good repair.

Tee Box

There is usually only one cart girl (who only carries drinks) on the course at a time but small coolers, soft drinks, beer and ice are available at the pro-shop.  There is one restroom per nine as well as a Taco-stand/snack bar (Thursday-Sunday) after No 4 on El Moro or No 3 on Castilla (aka No 12 on the first 18).
